Te mapa
Petersburg sits on the south bank of the Appomattox River, south of Richmond. On a map, the oldest streets gather near the water in the area now called Old Towne. From there the city spreads south and west in a mix of grids that do not quite line up, because each was added at a different time. Just across a narrow channel of the river lies Pocahontas Island, one of the oldest free Black communities in the country.
The city's best-known chapter is the Siege of Petersburg in 1864 and 1865, when Union and Confederate armies dug in around the city for more than nine months. Petersburg National Battlefield keeps part of that landscape, including the site of the Crater. From above, its long, winding park roads trace the old lines of trenches and forts at the city's eastern edge.
Today Interstates 95 and 85 meet at Petersburg, and their curves wrap around the older city like a modern ring. A Petersburg map poster sets all of these layers side by side: the river bend, the historic core, the battlefield roads and the highway ramps. The result is a detailed composition that rewards a close look.

East of the city, the tour roads of Petersburg National Battlefield wind through wooded ground and follow the lines of the 1864–65 siege.
I-95 and I-85 meet on the edge of town, and their long ramps add strong, sweeping curves to the southern part of the map.
