Te mapa
Podilsk lies in the northern part of Ukraine's Odesa region, on the rolling steppe land between the Dniester and the Southern Bug. The town grew around a railway junction in the late nineteenth century, and the tracks still shape its map: rail lines cross the town, dividing it into districts and bringing a strong, straight axis into an otherwise open landscape.
The settlement was historically known as Birzula, and in the Soviet period it was renamed Kotovsk. In 2016, under Ukraine's decommunisation laws, it became Podilsk, a name linked to the historic Podillia region. The small Kodyma river runs through the area, and fields stretch in every direction beyond the edge of town.
A Podilsk map poster shows the importance of the railway. Tracks and sidings form wide, parallel bands through the centre, with streets arranged in blocks on either side. The residential areas are mostly regular, with low-rise houses in neat rows, and the town gives way quickly to open farmland, which frames the composition with calm, empty space.

Residential streets on either side of the tracks run in neat, regular rows of houses, typical of a town built around a railway.
Wide fields and small rivers surround the town, so the built-up area stands as a compact shape within a broad, open landscape.
