Pohnpei is the largest and most populous island of the Federated States of Micronesia and home to the national capital, Palikir, in the island's northwest. The nearby town of Kolonia, close to the northern coast, is the main commercial centre. The island is roughly circular and rises steeply to a forested volcanic interior. It is known as one of the wettest inhabited places on earth.
Its map is a series of concentric rings. The mountainous core gives way to river valleys and a coastal road, then a fringe of mangroves, then a broad lagoon scattered with small islets. Around all of it runs a barrier reef. A Pohnpei map poster shows every one of these layers, and Sokehs Island, with its sheer rock face, stands out near Kolonia.
Off the eastern shore, beside Temwen Island, lies Nan Madol, a complex of nearly a hundred artificial islets built on the reef flat from stacked basalt columns. It was the ceremonial and political centre of the Saudeleur dynasty and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its pattern of small islands and canals is one of the most extraordinary shapes in the Pacific.
A reef encircles the island at a distance, enclosing a lagoon dotted with low islets and giving the map a second outline around the first.
On the reef off the eastern coast, a cluster of small rectangular islets separated by channels marks the ancient basalt city, drawn at fine scale on larger prints.
Just northwest of Kolonia, the island of Sokehs rises to a steep basalt cliff, a distinct shape beside the town and its harbour.

Pohnpeians abroad, former volunteers and teachers, divers, and anyone who has walked among the basalt walls of Nan Madol will recognise this island. The rings of mountain, mangrove, lagoon and reef make a composed, balanced print.
