Proletarsk sits in the east of Rostov Oblast, where the southern Russian steppe flattens into long fields and wide horizons. From above, the town reads as an orderly grid of low-rise blocks. The town grew from a Cossack settlement and took its present name in the Soviet period. That history shows on the map.
