Te mapa
Pu’an lies in the mountains of northern Sichuan, in Jiange County, part of Guangyuan. This is steep, folded country, where towns grow along valley floors and roads follow rivers because there is little other space. From above, Pu’an is long and narrow. Its streets are squeezed between slopes, and the built-up area thins quickly once the hills begin.
The county is named after the Jianmen Pass, a narrow gap in the cliffs on the ancient Shu roads that linked the Sichuan Basin with the north. Those roads have been famous since the Three Kingdoms period, and they gave rise to Li Bai's line about the road to Shu being harder than climbing to heaven. Their logic still shapes the region's transport routes today.
A Pu’an map poster works well as a study of terrain. Streets follow contour lines, roads twist between ridges, and small watercourses cut through the landscape. The drawing is sparse compared with a city in the plains, and that sparseness is exactly what makes it beautiful in black and white.
The streets fill a narrow strip of flat land between hills. The result is an elongated urban shape that is very different from the grids of cities in the basin.
Routes out of town wind along valleys and over ridges. On the print they appear as long, curling lines with lots of sharp turns.
The surrounding county sits on the historic route through the Jianmen Pass. It is a reminder that this landscape has shaped travel in the region for centuries.
