German settlers founded Puerto Montt in 1853 on the northern shore of the Reloncaví Sound in southern Chile. From above, the city is squeezed between the water and a line of hills. A narrow strip of streets runs along the waterfront, and the rest of the city climbs the slopes behind it in terraces, with newer neighbourhoods spreading onto the higher ground.
Just offshore lies Tenglo Island, separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. To the west is the Angelmó district, with its fishing boats and seafood market. The Sound opens out toward the islands and fjords of the south, so the coastline dominates any map of the city and gives the print a strong, detailed edge.
Puerto Montt is the northern starting point of the Carretera Austral, the road that runs south through Patagonia, and a centre of Chile's salmon farming industry.
