Te mapa
Raduzhny lies deep in the West Siberian taiga in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. Its map is strikingly compact. A planned town of apartment blocks is grouped into numbered microdistricts, with straight roads and large courtyards, set as a clear island in the forest. Around it, the landscape is almost entirely natural, with dark forest, wetlands and many small lakes of irregular shape.
The town was founded in the 1970s and 1980s to serve the oil fields of the region, and oil remains central to its economy. Its name means 'rainbow'. As in many northern towns, the winters are long and cold, and the town was designed to be self-contained, with services close to where people live.
A Raduzhny map poster shows the clear boundary between a planned Soviet-era town and the wild land that surrounds it. The rectangular microdistricts contrast with the scattered lakes and bogs. The image is simple, graphic and quietly unusual, a memento for people who spent years of their lives in the north.
Groups of apartment blocks form planned residential units with straight roads, so the town centre looks orderly and compact.
Many small lakes and wetlands dot the surrounding forest. They add irregular shapes to the outer areas of the map.
The planned streets end abruptly where the forest begins. The border between city and taiga is unusually sharp.

Koteā ko Raduzhny
The map means a lot to people who worked in the oil fields, grew up in Raduzhny or later moved south. It records a place where many northern stories began.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, including in Cyrillic, or add the years you lived there. The map comes in five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. It is available as a digital HD file or a printed poster.
