Sal’sk lies in the southeast of Rostov Oblast, in the wide steppe that stretches toward the Kalmyk border. It began as a settlement around a railway station, and the tracks still define its shape. Lines converge on the junction and cut the town into sections, with extensive yards and depots along them.
The land is flat, so the town's plan is orderly: long straight streets crossing at right angles, with mostly low houses and gardens inside the blocks. The surrounding steppe is known for horse breeding, and the stud farms of the region have been important in Russian horse breeding for generations.
