Te mapa
From above, Samarkand shows two cities side by side. To the east lies the old town, with irregular lanes, courtyards and the great ensembles of the Timurid era. To the west spreads the grid laid out after 1868, with tree-lined avenues fanning out from a central park. North of both is the empty, rounded plateau of Afrasiyab, the site of the ancient city.
Samarkand was Timur's capital in the late fourteenth century, and the monuments he and his successors built still set the scale of the centre: the Registan with its three madrasas, the Bibi-Khanym mosque, the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum and the street of tombs at Shah-i-Zinda. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains one of the best-known stops on the historic Silk Road.
A Samarkand map poster makes the meeting of these two plans easy to see. The tangled old quarter and the orderly radial streets sit next to each other, with Afrasiyab as a pale open shape to the north and the Zarafshan valley beyond. The result is a map that explains the city's history without a single label.
The Registan's open square sits at the edge of the old town, where narrow lanes and inner courtyards form a dense, irregular pattern around the major monuments.
West of the old centre, avenues laid out in the late nineteenth century spread out from a central park, a clear geometric contrast to the older fabric.
The ancient city mound to the north shows as a large, almost empty space, the site of Samarkand before the Mongol conquest of 1220.

Koteā ko Samarkand
Samarkand is a place people travel far to see, and a map poster keeps the memory of the domes and courtyards in a quieter form. It also suits anyone interested in how cities grow, since two distinct eras sit side by side on one sheet.
Title it with the city's name in Latin or Cyrillic, add the date of your visit in the subtitle, and keep the coordinates. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand in particular suits the colour of the old town.
