Te mapa
Tirmiz, also written Termez, lies on the northern bank of the Amu Darya, where the river forms the border between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. From above, the city spreads north from the water in a fairly regular grid of wide Soviet-era avenues, with irrigated fields and orchards pressing in around it.
The river is the defining line of any Tirmiz map poster. Its braided channels, sandbanks and floodplain run along the southern edge, crossed by the Friendship Bridge, the road and rail link to Hairatan on the Afghan side.
The site has been settled for over two thousand years. Around the modern city lie the remains of Buddhist monasteries from the Kushan era and the mausoleum of the scholar al-Hakim at-Tirmidhi, whose name comes from the city. It is also known as one of the hottest places in Uzbekistan.
The wide river with its shifting channels and islands forms a textured southern border, very different in feel from the straight streets of the city above it.
The long crossing to Afghanistan appears as a single thin line spanning the river, one of the few fixed links across the Amu Darya along this stretch.
The modern centre uses broad avenues and large rectangular blocks, a clear grid that sits within the patchwork of irrigated farmland around the city.

Koteā ko Tirmiz
Tirmiz sits where old Silk Road routes crossed the river, and a map of it carries that sense of edge and passage. It suits people with roots in Surxondaryo or those interested in Central Asian history.
Personalise the title with Tirmiz or Termez, write a line of your own in the subtitle, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Files come in six sizes as 300 DPI PNG and PDF.
