Te mapa
Santiago Atitlán lies on the southern shore of Lake Atitlán, in Guatemala's highlands. The town fills the land at the head of a narrow inlet, with the volcanoes Tolimán and San Pedro rising on either side. On a map its streets climb up from the water in a dense, irregular pattern, hemmed in by the slopes.
It is the largest community on the lake and a centre of the Tz'utujil Maya people. The town is also known for its traditions around the figure of Maximón, whose shrine moves between households. Boats link Santiago with Panajachel and other lakeside towns, so the shoreline and water matter as much as the roads.
A Santiago Atitlán map poster shows the drama of the site in simple lines. Streets crowd toward the inlet and the lake opens wide beyond it, while the volcano flanks leave broad empty areas on either side. In monochrome, the calm water and the busy grain of the town form a striking contrast.
The town sits at the end of a long, narrow arm of the lake. Its waterfront wraps around the head of the bay where boats come in.
Volcanic slopes rise directly beside the town. On the map they show as open space around it, with roads winding up their lower flanks.
Short, closely packed lanes climb from the shore, forming a tight, organic pattern very different from a planned grid.
