Sanxi lies in the mountainous north-east of Chongqing, the Three Gorges region, where the Yangtze and its tributaries have cut deep valleys through limestone ranges. There is very little flat ground here, and the map reflects that. The town squeezes into a narrow valley, and its streets follow the watercourse instead of spreading across it.
Roads into and out of Sanxi climb the slopes in tight bends and switchbacks, so even a short distance on the map can mean a long drive. Small villages and terraced fields perch on shelves of land higher up, and streams run down steep side valleys toward the larger rivers.
