Sāram lies on the Chota Nagpur Plateau in Jharkhand, a region of undulating ground, red soils, woodland patches and farmland. On a map the town looks informal. Lanes branch off a few main roads, and houses cluster along them before thinning into fields. There is no imposed grid here. The street pattern has grown gradually from paths and local routes.
The plateau around the town is crossed by small streams and seasonal watercourses, and ponds and tanks show up as small pale shapes. Village roads fan out in several directions and link Sāram to the countryside. The result is a web of fine lines with a slightly denser centre, spreading across a broad and open frame.
