Te mapa
Saran lies on the flat steppe south-west of Karaganda, in central Kazakhstan. It grew up in the mid-twentieth century as part of the Karaganda coal basin. From above, it has the character of a planned Soviet industrial town. Residential blocks are arranged in regular groups, with wide streets between them, and mining sites and rail lines sit around the edges.
The surrounding land is almost completely flat and treeless, so on a map the town's structure appears with unusual clarity. Railway lines connect it with the rest of the basin, and roads lead toward Karaganda, which is close enough that the two cities feel almost joined. Spoil heaps and industrial areas are scattered across the landscape.
A Saran map poster is a clear record of industrial planning on the steppe. There are neighbourhood blocks, straight main streets, rail tracks and wide open ground. In black and white, and especially in the Noir or Blueprint styles, its geometric plan becomes a strong graphic composition.
Residential districts are laid out in regular groups of buildings with courtyards between them. This is the typical pattern of a Soviet-era mining town.
Railway lines serving the coal basin run around and through the town. They form long curves that contrast with the straight street grid.
Beyond the town, the land is flat and almost empty. Its white expanse makes Saran's dense structure stand out on the print.
