Te mapa
Sarpol-e Z̄ahāb lies in western Kermanshah Province, close to the border with Iraq, where the Zagros Mountains begin to rise from the lowlands. The town follows the Alvand River valley, with its streets stretched along the water and cultivated land extending along the valley floor.
This valley has been a route between Mesopotamia and the Iranian plateau for thousands of years, and the ancient city of Hulwan once stood in the area. Rock reliefs carved into the cliffs nearby, including the Anubanini relief attributed to the Lullubi, are among the oldest monuments of their kind in Iran.
In 2017, a powerful earthquake caused severe damage to the town, and much of it has since been rebuilt. A Sarpol-e Z̄ahāb map poster shows the lasting geography: a river valley, a main road through a mountain pass and a town that has grown up along that route.
The river runs through the town and sets its orientation, with streets and fields following the valley floor between the rising ground on either side.
Carved reliefs on the cliffs near the town date back to the third and second millennia BCE and are among the region's best-known archaeological sites.
The main road through the valley follows an ancient route toward the Zagros passes, appearing on the map as a strong line through the town.
