Sartell lies in central Minnesota on the Mississippi River, just north of St. Cloud. On a map, the river is the central feature, running through the city and dividing it into two parts. Residential areas extend from its banks with a mix of grid streets, curving lanes and cul-de-sacs typical of newer neighbourhoods.
For much of its history, Sartell was closely tied to its paper mill on the river, which operated for about a century before closing in 2012.
