Te mapa
Sasolburg was founded in the 1950s as a company town for the Sasol plant, where coal was converted into fuels and chemicals, and its map still shows that origin clearly. Residential suburbs were laid out with curving streets, crescents and cul-de-sacs, separated by strips of parkland in the garden-city style popular at the time.
To one side lies the industrial complex, which follows a very different pattern of long rectangular plots, internal roads and rail sidings. Seeing the two side by side is the most striking thing about the town from above. The Vaal River runs to the north and forms the provincial boundary with Gauteng, giving the northern edge a soft, winding line.
A Sasolburg map poster makes a thoughtful piece for families connected to the plant or to the town's schools and suburbs. The drawing has an unusual balance: the gentle loops of the housing areas, the rigid order of industry, and the river beyond. In black and white it reads almost like a planning document from the era it came from.
Curving residential streets, crescents and wide green strips reflect the town's mid-century planning, creating soft looping forms that contrast with the straight grids of many South African towns.
The Sasol complex covers a large area of long rectangular plots, pipe corridors and internal roads, a dense geometric block beside the housing.
North of town the Vaal River winds between the Free State and Gauteng, adding an organic line and a natural border to the composition.

Koteā ko Sasolburg
Many people's working lives and childhoods are tied to Sasolburg, and a map is a quiet way to honour that. Give it a family surname, the year you arrived or left, or the coordinates of a particular street, and it becomes a keepsake with a clear story behind it.
The planned layout looks especially good in Blueprint, though Classic black & white, Noir, Paper and Sand all work. Choose the $9 HD download in six print sizes without a watermark, or have a matte poster printed and shipped from a partner close to you.
