Te mapa
Sassandra stands at the mouth of the river of the same name, on the western coast of Ivory Coast. On a map, the town occupies higher ground near the estuary, with streets running down toward the waterfront and the river opening wide as it reaches the sea. Sandbanks, a narrow channel and the curving shoreline give the composition its main lines.
In colonial times Sassandra was an important port for timber and other goods, before the growth of San-Pédro further west drew trade away. Today it is better known for fishing, with wooden pirogues drawn up on the beaches, and for the long, quiet coastline that stretches in both directions from the river mouth.
A Sassandra map poster brings together three shapes: the town on its rise, the broad bends of the river, and the clean arc of the Atlantic coast. It is a coastal map without the usual resort sprawl, and the open water on the paper gives the whole image a calm, spacious feel.
The Sassandra River widens as it approaches the sea, and the estuary, sandbanks and channel form the strongest shapes on the poster.
The older town sits on raised ground above the water, its streets descending toward the port area and the river bank.
Long sandy beaches curve away from the estuary on either side, drawn as one fine, continuous line against the open expanse of the sea.

For anyone who has spent time on this coast, or has family in the Bas-Sassandra region, the map holds the river, the port and the sea in one frame. It also works simply as a clean coastal image.
