Satipo lies in the Junín region, in Peru's selva central, where the eastern Andes slope down into the Amazon basin. On the map, the town fills a valley floor beside the Satipo River. It has a fairly regular street grid, and steep, forested hills close in on either side.
The town is a trading centre for the surrounding area, which is known for coffee, cacao and fruit, and it sits in a region that is also home to Asháninka communities. Roads follow the valleys, because the terrain leaves them few other routes.
