Schmallenberg is a town in the Hochsauerland district of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the upper valley of the Lenne. By area it is one of the largest municipalities in the state, taking in many villages spread across forested hills. On the map, the town centre is only a small part of a much wider picture of valleys and wooded ridges.
The core town sits in the valley, its old centre lined with houses clad in dark Sauerland slate. Roads follow the river and the side valleys, while the villages appear as small clusters at intervals along them. Large areas between them are forest, which gives the poster wide, quiet spaces.
Beyond the region, the name became known in 2011, when a newly identified livestock virus was named after the town where it was first detected. A Schmallenberg map poster shows the more lasting picture: a valley town in hiking country, with its villages spread across the Sauerland hills.
