Grown-together villages
Several former village centres make up the town, and on the map you can still pick out their separate street clusters where later housing has filled the gaps between them.

Te mapa
Schortens sits in the Friesland district of Lower Saxony, a few kilometres inland from the Jade Bay and Wilhelmshaven. From above it reads as a town of several parts rather than one centre. Older village cores, newer housing estates and commercial strips have grown into each other along the main roads, and each still carries its own name and its own small cluster of streets.
The land around it is almost perfectly flat, so the map is shaped by what people have built. Straight field boundaries and drainage ditches cut the open ground into long rectangles, and the rail line to Jever and Wilhelmshaven runs across the town as a clean diagonal. Where housing ends, the lines thin out quickly into farmland, a contrast that looks especially sharp in monochrome.
A Schortens map poster also records two pieces of twentieth-century history. The large former Olympia typewriter works at Roffhausen once made the town known well beyond Friesland, and the Upjever air base lies within its boundaries. Both show on the map as wide, open blocks set against the finer grain of the residential streets.
Several former village centres make up the town, and on the map you can still pick out their separate street clusters where later housing has filled the gaps between them.
The line connecting Wilhelmshaven and Jever crosses the town at an angle, a firm straight stroke that stands out against the softer curves of the estate roads.
Around the edges, long rectangular fields divided by ditches give the poster a ruled, almost graphic border that is typical of the North Sea coastal lowlands.

Koteā ko Schortens
Schortens is the kind of place people carry with them after moving away: a childhood street in one of the villages, a posting at the air base, a family link to the typewriter works. A map puts all of those small memories into one frame.
You can add a title, a subtitle such as a village name or a year, and your own coordinates line, then choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 digital download covers six print sizes with no watermark.
