Seropédica lies in the Baixada Fluminense west of the city of Rio de Janeiro, on flat, open land below the Serra do Mar. The town is best known as the home of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, whose main campus covers a large part of the municipality and shapes much of its character.
The name refers to silk production, which was practised in the area in the nineteenth century. From above, the urban part of Seropédica is modest and loosely organised along main roads, while fields, pastures and patches of woodland dominate the land around it. Highways cross the municipality and connect it with Rio, the port of Itaguaí and the rest of the state.
