Sestri Levante has one of the clearest shapes on the Italian Riviera. The historic centre sits on a narrow isthmus joining the mainland to a rocky, wooded promontory. On either side lies a bay, so the old town has water on both flanks. Behind it the modern town fills a small coastal plain before the Ligurian hills rise steeply.
The two bays are named the Bay of Silence and the Bay of Fables. The second name is linked to Hans Christian Andersen, who is said to have stayed here. The Bay of Silence, small and sheltered with colourful houses along its beach, is one of the best-known views in Liguria.
