Shāzand lies on a high plain in Markazi province, south-west of the city of Arak, with the ranges of the Zagros rising nearby. It is the centre of Shāzand county and is known across Iran for its large oil refinery and petrochemical complex, which occupy extensive sites outside the town. On the map these industrial areas show as large, geometric blocks.
The town is compact, with a core of streets around its main roads and residential areas extending towards the surrounding fields. The plain is intensively farmed, and field boundaries give the land around Shāzand a regular, patchwork texture. Roads and a railway line cross the plain, connecting the town with Arak and the west.
