Te mapa
Shiogama is on the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, just northeast of Sendai, where the land meets the island-filled waters of Matsushima Bay. On a map the town wraps around a sheltered harbour, with piers and fish-market buildings along the shore and streets climbing into low hills behind.
On one of those hills stands Shiogama Shrine, the leading shrine of the old Mutsu province, reached by a long stone stairway. The port is known across Japan for its tuna landings and for having one of the highest numbers of sushi restaurants per person in the country.
A Shiogama map poster shows the tight grid of the harbour district, the curving roads on the hillside and the first islands of the Urato group offshore, served by local ferries. After the 2011 tsunami the waterfront was rebuilt, and its new sea walls and quays are part of the present shoreline.
Piers, fish-market buildings and quays line the sheltered harbour, forming a hard-edged waterfront that is the densest part of the map.
The shrine sits on a wooded hill above the town, where winding roads and a green gap in the street pattern mark its grounds.
Small pine-covered islands of the Urato group sit offshore, appearing as scattered forms in the bay beyond the port.
