Te mapa
Silao lies in the Nalanda district of Bihar, on the road that links the ruins of ancient Nalanda with the hill town of Rajgir. On the map it appears as a compact settlement strung along that route, its lanes pressed close together near the centre and fading quickly into a flat landscape of rice fields, ponds and village tracks.
The town is best known for khaja, a crisp, layered sweet made from flour and sugar that travellers along the route buy here. Silao khaja has received a geographical indication tag, tying the name of the town to the recipe. Sweet shops line the main road, which is also the thread that holds the whole street plan together.
A Silao map poster shows that simple structure clearly: one strong line of traffic, a knot of dense streets, then open plain in every direction. It suits anyone with roots in the district or memories of the Buddhist heritage circuit, where Silao is a familiar stop between two of the best-known sites in the region.
The main road runs straight through town and connects two major heritage sites, forming the backbone of the map and the line along which most buildings are gathered.
Near the market the blocks become small and tightly packed, with narrow lanes branching off the main road, creating the darkest and most detailed part of the drawing.
Around the town the plain is dotted with ponds and divided by field paths, a fine, scattered pattern that gives the margins of the poster a quiet texture.
