Te mapa
Sīrkāzhi lies in the Kaveri delta of Tamil Nadu, a few kilometres inland from the Bay of Bengal coast. The land is flat and crossed by irrigation channels. On a map the town's centre stands out immediately: a large rectangular temple compound around which the surrounding streets arrange themselves.
The Sattainathar temple, also called the Brahmapureeswarar temple, is one of the most important Shaiva shrines in the region. Tradition holds that Sirkazhi is the birthplace of Thirugnana Sambandar, the child-saint whose hymns are a cornerstone of Tamil devotional poetry. As in many delta temple towns, the streets reflect the shrine's central role.
A Sīrkāzhi map poster brings out that sacred geometry. The temple's walled rectangle and tank sit at the centre, lined by streets that run parallel to its sides. Paddy fields and water channels spread outward from the town.
The walled Sattainathar temple complex forms a large, clean rectangle at the heart of town. It is the clearest single shape on the map.
Following a common Tamil temple-town pattern, streets run alongside the walls of the compound and give the centre an ordered, concentric feel.
Irrigation canals and streams from the Kaveri system cross the surrounding plain in thin lines, linking the town to the rice fields around it.
