Te mapa
Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval lies at the head of the Giffre valley in Haute-Savoie, and its map ends in one of the most distinctive shapes in the French Alps. East of the village, the valley closes in a great semicircle of cliffs, the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval. In spring and early summer, waterfalls spill down its walls.
The village grew up around a medieval abbey, and today much of the commune lies within a large nature reserve. In winter, the lifts of Sixt connect with the Grand Massif ski area. The high valleys belong to walkers, climbers and wildlife.
A Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval map poster is shaped by that closed valley. The road follows the Giffre past the village and fades out below the cirque, and streams converge from every direction. Houses stay in a narrow band on the valley floor. The rest of the frame is steep, wild mountain country.
The cliffs form an almost continuous curve around the head of the valley. The shape reads clearly on the map and gives the commune its name.
The river rises in the high ground and runs past the village toward Samoëns. It is a single line that collects the streams falling from the cirque.
Much of the commune lies within a protected reserve, so most of the map has no roads or buildings. It stays a large, quiet expanse beyond the village.

Koteā ko Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval
For walkers and families who come for the cirque, the waterfalls or a winter on the Grand Massif, Sixt is unmistakable. Its dead-end valley and horseshoe of cliffs make one of the most recognisable shapes a mountain map can have.
