Te mapa
Skelmersdale was designated a new town in 1961 and built to house people moving out of Merseyside. Its map looks unlike any traditional English town. Instead of a high street with roads leading off it, there are distributor roads that curve around self-contained housing areas, with roundabouts at their junctions and separate footpaths running between them.
At the heart of the plan is the Tawd valley, a long green corridor of woodland and open space that runs through the town. Housing estates sit on either side, each reached by short cul-de-sacs and loops. The older mining village that preceded the new town survives as a small area of more traditional terraced streets, and on the map it contrasts clearly with the planned layout around it.
A Skelmersdale map poster shows the post-war planners' ideas very clearly: separated traffic, green space throughout, and neighbourhoods designed as individual units. People who live here know how confusing it can be to navigate, yet the same plan makes an attractive graphic print. It is a memorable choice for residents and for anyone interested in urban planning.

Curving distributor roads meet at roundabouts across the town. Their smooth arcs and circles give the map the distinctive look of a planned new town.
Each residential area has its own pattern of loops and dead ends. Together they create a detailed, almost organic texture between the main roads.

Koteā ko Skelmersdale
Residents hang Skelmersdale because it is home and because it looks unlike anywhere else. Planning enthusiasts enjoy it as a clear example of British new-town design, and its curving roads and roundabouts look good in any style.
Add a title, subtitle and coordinates, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the planned layout especially well. The $9 files include 18×24″ and 24×36″ sizes as well as metric sizes.
