Te mapa
Slonim, in the Grodno region of western Belarus, sits where the Shchara River loops through a gently rolling landscape. The river divides the town, and its bends shape the plan. The older centre lies close to the water, while newer districts spread out along the roads leading from the bridges.
The historic streets follow the terrain and the river instead of a strict grid, with small squares and churches among them. The town's former Great Synagogue is one of its best-known historic buildings. Further out, the neighbourhoods become more regular before giving way to fields and forest.
In the eighteenth century, the Oginski family, closely associated with Slonim, sponsored a canal linking the Shchara with the Dnieper basin. A Slonim map poster shows a town shaped by its river, with centuries of history visible in the layout of its streets.
The river curves through the town in wide loops, giving Slonim its most distinctive feature and dividing the map into clear sections.
Near the river, older streets wind between squares and places of worship, creating a denser and more irregular pattern than the outer districts.
Several bridges link the two banks, and the main roads spread out from them, showing how the town grew across and along the river.
