Te mapa
Smarhoń lies in the north-east of the Hrodna region of Belarus, on the railway between Minsk and Vilnius. The town centre is compact, with streets around its main squares, while residential districts, industrial areas and the rail corridor extend outward. Beyond them, fields, woods and scattered villages surround the town on every side.
The town has a long and unusual reputation. In the eighteenth century it was known for the so-called Bear Academy, where bears were trained to perform at fairs, and a bear still appears on its coat of arms. In December 1812, during the retreat from Moscow, Napoleon left his army here and set off for Paris.
A Smarhoń map poster shows a town arranged around a small river and a strong railway line. The historic centre, the more regular post-war blocks and the roads leading toward Vilnius and Minsk create a clear structure. In black and white, the surrounding fields and forests give the design wide, calm margins.
The railway passes through the town in a long line that divides the map and links Smarhoń with the capitals of Belarus and Lithuania.
The centre is organised around a few main streets and squares. This denser area is the natural focus of the poster among the surrounding residential blocks.
Around the town, farmland and woods alternate in large patches, crossed by straight rural roads that lead to villages in every direction.

Few towns have a story like Smarhoń's, from trained bears to Napoleon's departure in 1812. For people who grew up there or have family roots in the Hrodna region, a map of the town is a personal piece for the wall that also starts conversations.
