Te mapa
Socorro lies in El Paso County, Texas, in the Rio Grande valley south-east of El Paso, directly across the river from Mexico. The town stretches along the valley floor. Instead of a central downtown, its map is shaped by long roads, irrigation canals and the boundaries of former farm fields running parallel to the river.
Socorro is one of the oldest communities in Texas. Its mission was founded in the 1680s by people displaced during the Pueblo Revolt in New Mexico, and it stands on the Mission Trail alongside Ysleta and San Elizario. The adobe church standing today dates from the nineteenth century, built after floods destroyed earlier ones. Irrigated farming has long shaped the surrounding valley.
A Socorro map poster shows a landscape of lines: canals and drains, straight rural roads and long narrow lots, with newer subdivisions forming neat blocks between them. The Rio Grande runs along one side and marks the international border. The result is an unusually graphic composition, closer to a field pattern than to a conventional town map.

Canals and drains cross the valley in long straight and gently curving lines. They are remnants of a farming system that still gives the map much of its structure.
The river marks the edge of the town and the border with Mexico. On the poster it appears as a thin, deliberate line dividing two countries.

Koteā ko Socorro
Socorro means a great deal to families who have farmed the valley for generations, and to people drawn to the history of the missions. A map of its canals and roads is a distinctive piece that speaks quietly of the borderland.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose between Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, which suits the desert valley well. Download the files for $9 or order a print from a nearby partner.
