Te mapa
Sōma lies on the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture. On the map, the city runs from the shoreline, where the wide Matsukawa-ura lagoon is separated from the ocean by a narrow sandbar, to a compact centre further inland that grew around the former castle of the Sōma clan. Rice fields and farmland fill the plains between them, crossed by rail lines and roads.
The city is known for the Sōma Nomaoi, a festival of mounted riders in samurai armour with roots stretching back centuries, held together with neighbouring Minamisōma. The coastal part of the city was severely damaged by the tsunami of March 2011, and much of that area has since been rebuilt with new sea defences.
A Sōma map poster traces the curving edge of the lagoon, the coastline and the orderly streets of the old castle town. It is a thoughtful image for anyone connected to this part of the Tōhoku coast.
A broad lagoon lies along the coast, cut off from the ocean by a slender sandbar, creating the most striking shape on the map.
The inland centre developed around the former castle of the Sōma clan, and its grid of streets forms the densest part of the poster.
Between the town and the ocean, flat farmland is divided into regular plots by roads and channels, giving the map a calm, measured texture.

Koteā ko Sōma
Sōma is meaningful for people from the Tōhoku coast, for those who have watched the Nomaoi riders, and for families who saw the city rebuild. The lagoon and coast make a distinctive image.
