Estate crescents
Much of the town is made of curving streets and closes from the post-war period. From above they form rounded, repeating shapes that are easy to recognise.

Te mapa
South Ockendon lies in Thurrock, Essex, just beyond Greater London's eastern boundary. The map shows a town made largely of post-war estates. There are curving closes, crescents and cul-de-sacs, arranged in neighbourhoods along a few main roads. To the east and north the pattern softens into fields and the Mardyke valley, and the M25 passes a short way to the west.
The town grew rapidly after the Second World War, when new housing was built for families moving out of London. Next to it lies Belhus Woods Country Park, on part of the former Belhus estate. Its woodland, lakes and paths are shown as open space right beside the houses.
A South Ockendon map poster captures a landscape found all around the edges of London: planned estates, green buffers and major roads, all fitted closely together. In black and white the rounded crescents of the housing stand out against the straight lines of the railway and the motorway.
Much of the town is made of curving streets and closes from the post-war period. From above they form rounded, repeating shapes that are easy to recognise.
The country park's woodland and lakes sit right beside the housing. They make a large, calm open space on the town's northern side.
The railway runs through the town towards London, and the orbital motorway passes nearby. Together they form the strongest straight lines on the map.
