Steenwijk lies in the north of Overijssel, close to the borders with Friesland and Drenthe. On a map its historic centre is unmistakable: a compact old town enclosed by the traces of former fortifications, with ramparts and bastions whose angular shapes remain visible in the line of parks, water and streets around the core.
