Te mapa
Stepnogorsk lies in the Aqmola Region of northern Kazakhstan, on the steppe north of Astana. It was founded in the 1960s as a planned Soviet town, built around uranium mining and processing, and for decades it was closed to outsiders. Its name reflects its setting: a town in the steppe, surrounded by flat, open land in every direction.
On a map, Stepnogorsk looks unmistakably planned. Residential microdistricts with large apartment blocks are arranged in a compact, regular pattern, with broad avenues between them. Industrial zones sit at a distance from the housing, connected by long straight roads. Beyond the town, the steppe opens out, marked only by a few roads and small lakes.
A Stepnogorsk map poster shows the geometry of Soviet urban planning set against empty land. The tight rectangular town, the long approach roads and the wide surrounding space create a strong, graphic composition. In black and white, it becomes an almost abstract image, a clear record of a town built for a purpose in a remote landscape.
Apartment blocks are grouped into regular microdistricts, forming a compact geometric pattern that makes the town instantly recognisable as a planned settlement.
Industrial areas lie away from the residential town, linked by long straight roads that stretch across the steppe on the map.
The land around Stepnogorsk is flat and largely empty, leaving wide blank spaces that make the town’s outline sharp and distinct.
