Stillwater lies in north-central Oklahoma, in rolling prairie country. The town was settled after the Land Run of 1889, and its street plan shows it clearly: a square grid aligned with the compass, extended in every direction as the town grew. Stillwater Creek winds through the south and west, one of the few natural curves in the plan.
The city is best known as the home of Oklahoma State University. The campus takes up a large part of the map northwest of downtown, with quads, long academic buildings, parking areas and athletic facilities, including Boone Pickens Stadium. Downtown along Main Street keeps the older, smaller blocks of the original town.
