Te mapa
Sugita lies in Isogo Ward in the south of Yokohama, on the western shore of Tokyo Bay. The map falls into distinct layers: wooded hills and hillside housing to the west, a close-knit mesh of shopping streets and homes in the middle, and a strip of reclaimed land along the bay, where large industrial sites form broad, geometric blocks.
Sugita was once known across the Kanto region for its plum groves, which drew visitors in the Edo period to see the blossom in early spring. Today it is a residential and commercial area served by both the Keikyu line and the JR Negishi line, with a long covered shopping street near the stations.
A Sugita map poster captures the transition from hills to sea that defines much of Yokohama. The railway lines run parallel to the coast, the older streets fill the narrow flat land between them and the slopes, and the reclaimed shoreline adds sharp, straight edges to the composition.
Along the bay, large rectangular plots of reclaimed land extend into the water, their straight edges and wide roads contrasting with the finer streets inland.
Two rail lines run along the coast through the area, forming strong linear strokes that frame the older streets between the hills and the shore.
To the west, residential streets climb into wooded hills along winding lanes, a pattern typical of the southern suburbs of Yokohama.
