Te mapa
Sullana stands in the Piura Region of northern Peru, on high ground overlooking the Chira River. From above the contrast is sharp. The river valley forms a green band of irrigated fields, while the land beyond is dry desert and scrub. The city's grid covers the higher ground above the river, with older blocks near the edge of the valley and newer districts spreading outward.
The river gives Sullana its nickname, the Pearl of the Chira. Upstream, the Poechos reservoir stores water for irrigation, and canals branching through the valley feed rice fields, banana plantations and lime orchards. Bridges cross the river and link the city with farms and villages on the far bank. On a map, the river valley is the clearest and most important feature.
Sullana lies about forty kilometres north of Piura. It is a commercial centre for the Chira valley and a stop on the road north toward the Ecuadorian border. A Sullana map poster shows a city that depends on its river. The city grid sits on the high ground, the green valley runs below, and the desert begins just beyond.
The irrigated river valley forms a green band below the city, full of fields and orchards. It is the main contrast on the map against the dry land around it.
Bridges link Sullana with the farms and villages on the other side of the Chira. They create short, strong lines across the valley on the map.
Sullana's grid spreads across higher ground above the river. Its sharp edge along the valley makes the city's outline unusually clear from above.
