Te mapa
Cajamarca lies in a broad valley of the northern Peruvian Andes, at around 2,700 metres, surrounded by green hills and farmland. From above, the historic centre forms a regular Spanish colonial grid of square blocks around the Plaza de Armas. The city spreads outward from there across the valley floor, toward the mountains that surround it.
It was here, in November 1532, that Francisco Pizarro and his men captured the Inca ruler Atahualpa, an event that shaped the Spanish conquest of Peru. The Ransom Room, which Atahualpa is said to have offered to fill with gold and silver in exchange for his freedom, is still shown to visitors a short walk from the main square.
Santa Apolonia hill rises close to the centre, with steps and viewpoints looking down over the grid. A few kilometres east are the Baños del Inca hot springs. A Cajamarca map poster sets all of this out clearly: the colonial blocks, the hillside beside them and the roads leading out into the valley.
The main square sits at the centre of the colonial grid. It is framed by the cathedral and other churches, and much of the city's history happened here.
The hill beside the historic centre breaks the regular pattern of blocks, with paths and steps climbing to views over the rooftops.
Roads leave the city across the valley floor toward the surrounding hills, including the route east to the hot springs at Baños del Inca.

Koteā ko Cajamarca
Travellers who have crossed the northern highlands, historians of the conquest and families from the region all find meaning in this map. It shows an Andean city whose centre has changed little since the colonial era.
