Sulur lies just east of Coimbatore in western Tamil Nadu, on the gently rolling plain below the Western Ghats. From above, the most commanding feature is the air base. Its long, straight runway and surrounding grounds take up a large part of the frame and give the map an unusually strong geometric line beside the town's streets.
The town itself is a compact cluster of streets around an older centre, with newer residential layouts spreading along the roads toward Coimbatore and nearby villages. Close by, the large Sulur tank appears as a broad open shape, part of the irrigation system fed by the Noyyal River. The Sulur Air Force Station is one of the Indian Air Force's important bases in the south. The area around it has grown with Coimbatore's industry, especially textiles and engineering.
