Te mapa
Tagawa lies in the Chikuhō region of Fukuoka prefecture, in a basin surrounded by low wooded hills. The Hikosan River flows through the city, and from above its course is joined by smaller streams and railway lines that follow the valley floors. Residential streets spread across the flat ground, while the hills around the edges hold the town in a loose, irregular frame.
For much of the twentieth century, Tagawa was a centre of coal mining, and the Chikuhō coalfield helped power Japan's industrialisation. Two tall chimneys and a winding tower from the former Mitsui Tagawa mine still stand in a park beside the coal mining history museum. The museum keeps the paintings of Yamamoto Sakubei, a miner whose works are listed in UNESCO's Memory of the World register. The folk song Tankō Bushi is also linked to the town.
A Tagawa map poster shows how an industrial past shaped a small city. Rivers, rail lines and roads converge in the basin, with the hills adding contour and space around them. It is a map with real depth for families who trace their roots to the mines.
The river winds through the basin and gives the map its main natural line. Bridges cross it at intervals, connecting the city's two sides.
Several railway lines converge on Tagawa, following the valley floor. They are a legacy of the coal era, when trains carried output out of the basin.
The site of the former Mitsui Tagawa mine, with its chimneys and winding tower, forms an open space close to the centre of the city.
