Te mapa
Tall Rif‘at lies on the open plain north of Aleppo in northern Syria. Its name refers to the tell, a large artificial mound formed by thousands of years of settlement, which rises beside the modern town. On the map the mound is a clear, rounded shape among the surrounding streets and fields, a trace of history that the town grew up alongside.
The site is widely identified with ancient Arpad, capital of the Aramean kingdom of Bit Agusi in the early first millennium BCE, mentioned in Assyrian records and in the Hebrew Bible. Today the town is a farming centre, its streets set out in a loose grid with a main road running through and fields of the Aleppo plain stretching away on every side.
A Tall Rif‘at map poster brings the ancient mound and the modern street plan together in one composition. It is intended for people with family ties to the town and its surrounding villages, many of whom now live elsewhere, as a calm and lasting picture of a place whose outline on the land carries memory across generations.
The large mound beside the town is the most distinctive feature on the map, its rounded form standing out clearly against the straighter lines of the surrounding streets.
The modern town is laid out in a loose grid of streets and blocks, with a main road running through it and connecting it to neighbouring towns.
Flat farmland surrounds the settlement, divided into fields and crossed by rural roads, filling the edges of the poster with a fine, open pattern.
