Te mapa
Thanhlyin, historically known as Syriam, lies southeast of central Yangon on the far bank of the Bago River, near where it joins the Yangon River. On a map the town is shaped by these waterways: broad channels along its edges, creeks threading through low farmland, and long bridges connecting it with the city across the water.
In the early seventeenth century Syriam was a major port, controlled for several years by the Portuguese adventurer Filipe de Brito until Burmese forces retook it. On a low hill south of town stands the Kyaik Khauk Pagoda, a gilded stupa visible across the flat land. Further downstream, the Thilawa port and special economic zone have brought new roads and industrial blocks.
A Thanhlyin map poster shows a town in transition: an older core by the river, a pattern of creeks and fields, and new straight lines of industry and housing spreading toward the estuary. It is a thoughtful keepsake for families from Yangon's eastern side and for anyone who knows the crossing well.

The pagoda stands on raised ground south of the centre. On the poster the hill and its approach roads form a small focal point in the flat landscape.
Downstream along the Yangon River, the port and industrial zone add large rectangular plots and new roads. They contrast with the older, irregular fields around them.

Koteā ko Thanhlyin
Thanhlyin has become home to many families who moved out from central Yangon, as well as workers drawn by the port zone. A map records the town as it is now, with its old pagoda hill and its new edges.
