Te mapa
Thanlyin sits on the eastern bank of the Bago River near where it meets the Yangon River, just across the water from Myanmar's largest city. From above, the town is shaped by these rivers. There is a waterfront, roads leading down to the bridges, and on the other sides a low, flat landscape crossed by creeks and cut into paddy fields.
Under its older name, Syriam, the town was an important port for centuries. In the early seventeenth century it was held by the Portuguese adventurer Filipe de Brito e Nicote before Burmese forces retook it. The Kyaik Khauk Pagoda stands on a rise just south of the town. Today Thanlyin also has industrial zones and newer suburbs growing toward the city.
A Thanlyin map poster traces this long relationship with water. Broad river channels frame one side of the page, and the bridge lines connect to Yangon. The street pattern thins out into the geometry of fields and small waterways. The layout records how the town has always faced the river.

Road and rail bridges cross the river toward Yangon. They show up as thin, decisive lines joining two very different street networks.
Past the town, creeks and field boundaries cover the flat ground. This low, watery patchwork is typical of the lower Irrawaddy region.
