Tharangambadi, long known to Europeans as Tranquebar, lies on the Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu. The Danish East India Company set up a trading post here in 1620, and the town stayed a Danish colony for more than two centuries until it was sold to the British in 1845. Fort Dansborg, the seventeenth-century Danish fort, still stands close to the beach.
The old town is a small, regular grid within the line of its former walls, with a main street running from the Landgate toward the sea. Churches, colonial houses and the fort form a compact ensemble. On a Tharangambadi map poster, the straight streets meet the smooth line of the coast in a composition of order and open water.
In 1706 the German missionaries Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau arrived here and began one of the first Protestant missions in India. Ziegenbalg later translated the New Testament into Tamil. The Masilamani Nathar temple stands on the shore, partly worn away by the sea. Wider frames take in the coastal plain, fishing settlements and the river mouths of the Kaveri delta.
The Danish fort sits near the shore, and its compact form is clearly readable at the seaward edge of the old town at every print size.
Straight streets within the former walls form a small, regular pattern, a European colonial plan preserved at a compact, walkable scale.
The long, smooth line of the Bay of Bengal coast frames the town, and the beach and sea give the map a wide, calm margin.
