Te mapa
Thiruvaiyaru lies on the northern bank of the Kaveri, a short distance north of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. Its name is usually explained as 'five rivers', after the streams of the Kaveri delta that flow through the area, and from above the town sits among parallel channels, irrigation canals and bright green paddy.
The town centres on the Panchanadeeswarar temple, whose large rectangular enclosure gives the street plan its heart. The main streets run around and toward it, and the river forms a strong edge to the south, with its bathing ghats along the bank.
Thiruvaiyaru is famous as the home and resting place of Tyagaraja, one of the great composers of Carnatic music. Every year musicians gather on the riverbank for the Tyagaraja Aradhana festival, and a Thiruvaiyaru map poster places that riverside setting at the centre of the design.
The Kaveri runs along the edge of town, and its broad bed and ghats are where the Tyagaraja Aradhana gathers musicians each year.
The walled compound of the Panchanadeeswarar temple forms a large rectangle at the centre, and the surrounding streets are organised around it.
Several rivers and canals of the Kaveri delta run nearly side by side here, crossing the map in long, parallel curves through the fields.
