Tikhoretsk lies in the north of Krasnodar Krai in southern Russia, on the open Kuban steppe. The town grew up around a railway station in the late nineteenth century, and the tracks still define its layout: several lines meet at the junction, and a regular grid of streets extends on either side.
It remains an important rail hub on routes linking the south of Russia with the rest of the country. A small river winds through the town, and beyond the last streets the land opens into wide, flat fields that are among the most fertile in the region.
