Te mapa
Tirāwari, better known as Taraori, lies in Karnal district of Haryana, directly on the old Grand Trunk Road, now National Highway 44, between Karnal and Kurukshetra. The highway runs straight through the map. The town has grown along both sides of it, with the railway running close by in parallel.
The surrounding plain is among the most intensively farmed land in India. From above it breaks into regular rectangular fields, cut by irrigation channels and field roads. Taraori is closely tied to basmati rice, and its many rice mills and storage yards appear as large, even blocks on the town's outskirts.
Historians generally identify the place with Tarain, where Prithviraj Chauhan and Muhammad of Ghor fought two decisive battles in 1191 and 1192. A Tirāwari map poster shows the calm geometry that covers that battlefield today, with a highway, a railway and fields stretching out in every direction.
National Highway 44, the historic Grand Trunk Road, crosses the town in a nearly straight line. It is the dominant stroke on the poster, and the town's streets branch off it.
Around the town the land is divided into regular rectangular plots. Irrigation channels and farm tracks trace a fine, even lattice that fills the edges of the map.
Large rice mill compounds sit along the approach roads. Their broad, simple footprints stand out clearly from the smaller residential blocks in the centre.

Koteā ko Tirāwari
For families from Karnal district, for people in the rice trade and for readers of medieval Indian history, Taraori is a name that carries weight. This poster sets that name against the actual shape of the ground.
