Te mapa
Tirunāgeswaram lies in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, a short distance from Kumbakonam, in the heart of the Cauvery delta. The land is flat and fertile, crossed by irrigation channels and dotted with water tanks. On the map, the town appears as a tight cluster of streets surrounded by paddy fields and the fine lines of the delta's watercourses.
The town is known above all for its Naganathaswamy temple, one of the Navagraha shrines, dedicated to Rahu and visited by pilgrims from across South India. As in many Tamil temple towns, the streets are arranged around the temple complex, with processional roads running along its walls and the rest of the town spreading out from there.
A Tirunāgeswaram map poster shows that sacred geometry clearly: the rectangle of the temple precinct, the streets that frame it and the water and fields beyond. The well-known Oppiliappan temple is also close by, adding to the area's importance as a place of pilgrimage within the dense network of delta towns.
The Naganathaswamy temple forms the centre of the town, a large rectangular enclosure around which the main streets are set out, as in many Tamil temple towns.
Irrigation channels and small rivers of the Cauvery delta run through the countryside around the town, drawing thin, winding lines across the flat farmland.
The town lies close to Kumbakonam, and connecting roads link it into a dense cluster of temple towns that together form one of South India's major pilgrimage areas.
